At 5 am on the 19th of May I woke to some cramping in my stomach and then a slight gush of water, luckily I had gone to bed with a pad on for the last few nights as I was starting to feel like I was getting close to being in labour and thankfully because I had the pad on I was able to go back to sleep easily afterwards. Still being 5 am I grabbed my phone and just let my midwife know what had happened but because I wasn’t experiencing any contractions yet I decided just to go back to sleep. Fast forward a few hours later to 9 am and Anthony had dropped Kaliah at daycare, I was experiencing strong contractions closer together now and we were getting ready to head to the Bethlehem Birthing Centre (BBC). About 30 seconds down the road more of my waters broke and I realised we had no towels or anything in the car if the baby was to come out of me right in the car, so I told Anthony to turn us around and grab some towels. I hobbled back inside and changed my pad again, grabbed the towels whilst having some strong contractions and then made our way for the second time to the BBC. Once at the BBC, my midwife checked me and I was 5cm dilated, and fully effaced but our baby was in the right occiput posterior position (ROP) so to get our baby into the optimal position I spent the next few hours leaning over onto the edge of the bed rolling on my swiss ball and all fours on the ground. At 11:40 am Anthony was given clary sage & peppermint mixed in coconut oil to rub on my lower back whilst I inhaled frankincense in a cloth to assist with my contractions. At 1 pm I was given gas as my contractions were getting quite sore by this time and at 1:25 pm I delivered Makani laying on my left side laterally on the ground.
While I thought the hardest part was over I was wrong, at 3:30 pm I got up and tried to have a shower when I got into the bathroom It was hot and steamy and I ended up fainting in the shower down into the spa bath. The BBC midwives came in to help me get out of the bath but I called for Anthony because I felt too dizzy and that I was going to faint again trying to get out. I was right and again whilst trying to get out of the tub I fainted again, according to my notes I went pale, they took my blood, got me on an IV of fluids and was given an oxygen mask. Once I was able to get back into bed Kaliah and the rest of our family arrived to come and meet Makani so I lay in bed and rested while Makani met her sister and her family for the first time. Once they all left the BBC midwives decided that I needed to try and go to the bathroom without fainting otherwise I would have to move to the hospital to find out what was wrong. In short, I fainted again and we went on a nice little ambulance trip to the hospital. We stayed there the night and the summary of my diagnosis was exhaustion, loss of blood and then it was a few hours later before I was to have a shower so we think my body was just kind of ready to rest and the steam and heat in the bathroom added to my dizziness and fainting. Pretty much I was just tired and my body needed rest. I was out of there and back home with my babies by the next afternoon and ready to start taking on a new normal of having 2 children.
